Do I Need a Licence to Drive a Buggy in Croatia?

Buggy guide and guests

Short answer: yes, if you want to drive — a standard category B car licence is all you need. Here’s the detail, so you know exactly what to bring.

What licence covers a buggy tour

Self-drive off-road buggies used on guided tours in Croatia fall under the same licence category as a regular passenger car: category B. If you already hold a valid driving licence that lets you drive a car in your home country, you’re covered — there’s no special off-road, ATV, or motorcycle endorsement required.

You do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for a short guided tour — your regular national licence, if it’s in a Latin-alphabet format or accompanied by a translation/photo ID, is normally sufficient. If your licence is issued in a non-Latin script, bringing your passport alongside it as ID is a good habit either way.

What passengers need

Nothing. If you’re riding as a passenger — whether that’s in the seat next to the driver or on a private tour where our own driver takes the wheel — no licence is required at all, regardless of age (within the tour’s minimum age guidelines for children).

Minimum age and other requirements

The driver must be at least 18 years old. We ask you to bring your physical licence if you have it, so our staff can verify it in person before you drive.

What if I don’t have my licence with me?

You can still drive — you’ll sign a liability waiver confirming you hold a valid driving licence, and take responsibility for that declaration. If you’d rather not do that, you can still join as a passenger, or travel with someone else in your group who has their licence and let them drive. If nobody in your group has a licence at all, a private tour with our own driver is the way to still experience Mount Srđ off-road, with no licence needed from your side.

Do I need experience driving off-road?

No. Buggies are automatic, easy to control, and every self-drive tour starts with a short safety briefing and a guide leading the convoy at a manageable pace — you don’t need any prior off-road or manual-transmission experience.

The short version

  • Driving a buggy: category B licence, 18+. Bring the physical card if you have it; without it, you can still drive by signing a liability waiver.
  • Riding as a passenger: no licence needed, any age within tour guidelines.
  • No licence in your group at all: book a private tour and let our driver handle it.
