Best Things to Do in Dubrovnik Beyond the Walls — Hidden Gems & Outdoor Adventures

Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s most visited cities — and for good reason. The Old Town walls, the Stradun, the stunning Adriatic views. But if you’ve already walked the walls and explored the Old Town, you might be wondering: what else is there to do in Dubrovnik?

The answer is: a lot. Dubrovnik beyond the walls offers some of the most memorable experiences you’ll find anywhere on the Adriatic coast. Here are our top picks — including one that most visitors don’t discover until they step off the cable car.

1. Take the Dubrovnik Cable Car to Mount Srđ

The Dubrovnik Cable Car is one of the city’s top three most visited attractions — and it’s easy to see why. The 4-minute ride takes you from the Old Town up to Mount Srđ, where you get a 360° panoramic view of the Old Town, the Adriatic Sea, the Elafiti Islands and the Croatian coastline stretching north and south.

Most visitors take the cable car, spend 20 minutes at the top and come back down. But if you want to make the most of Mount Srđ, there’s a lot more waiting for you when you step off.

2. Drive a Buggy on Mount Srđ — the Best View in Dubrovnik

Right at the upper cable car station — immediately as you step off — you’ll find Buggy Adventure Dubrovnik. This is one of Dubrovnik’s most unique outdoor experiences, and one that most tourists only discover by accident when they arrive at the top.

You take the wheel of a Can-Am Maverick buggy — fully automatic, no experience needed — and follow your guide on off-road trails across Mount Srđ. The views from up here are unlike anything you’ll see from the walls below: the entire Old Town laid out beneath you, the deep blue of the Adriatic, and the surrounding islands on the horizon.

Self-drive tours depart every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 19:00, starting from €50 per person. If you prefer to sit back and enjoy the ride, private chauffeur tours with hotel pickup are available from €290 per vehicle.

Whether you book in advance or walk in on the day, the buggy tour is the perfect complement to the cable car ride — and together they make for an unforgettable half-day above Dubrovnik.

3. Visit the Napoleon Fortress on Mount Srđ

Also at the top of Mount Srđ is the Imperial Fortress — a Napoleonic-era fort built in the early 19th century that now houses the Museum of the Homeland War. The views from the fortress walls are spectacular, and the museum gives powerful insight into Dubrovnik’s recent history during the 1990s conflict.

It’s a short walk from the cable car station and well worth the visit, especially combined with a buggy tour — some of our tour routes pass near the fortress viewpoint.

4. Kayak Around the Old Town Walls

For a completely different perspective on Dubrovnik, get on the water. Sea kayaking tours around the base of the Old Town walls are popular and offer views you simply can’t get from land. Most tours depart from Banje Beach in the morning and last 2–3 hours.

5. Explore Lokrum Island

Just 600 metres from the Old Town, Lokrum Island is a lush nature reserve accessible by ferry from the Old Harbour. No cars, no hotels — just botanical gardens, peacocks, a Benedictine monastery, a saltwater lake and stunning swimming spots. Perfect for a half-day escape from the crowds.

6. Swim at Banje Beach or Lapad Bay

Dubrovnik’s beaches are small but beautiful. Banje Beach is the closest to the Old Town and offers views of the walls and Lokrum. For something quieter, head to Lapad Bay — a pine-shaded promenade with calmer water, local restaurants and a more relaxed atmosphere. Our private buggy tours also pass through Lapad as part of the route.

7. Watch the Sunset from Mount Srđ

The most spectacular sunset in Dubrovnik isn’t from the walls — it’s from the top of Mount Srđ. As the sun drops towards the Adriatic, the light turns the Old Town golden and the sea goes deep orange and pink. We recommend booking a late afternoon buggy tour at 16:00 or 17:00 specifically for this experience. It’s the golden hour from the best seat in Dubrovnik.
