Mount Srđ is the 412-metre hill towering directly above Dubrovnik’s Old Town — the single best viewpoint over the city, and the starting point for every buggy tour we run. Here’s a complete practical guide to the mountain itself.
How to get up
Three ways: the cable car from the Old Town (4 minutes, runs year-round, ticketed separately from any tour), driving up the winding road by car or taxi, or riding up as part of a buggy tour — the only way to actually explore the mountain’s trails rather than just the summit viewpoint.
Fort Imperial
The Napoleonic-era fortress at the summit, built in 1809–1815, now houses the Museum of the Homeland War — a compact but powerful exhibit on the 1991–92 siege of Dubrovnik, when Fort Imperial was the city’s last line of defence. Worth 20–30 minutes if you’re at the top regardless of how you got there.
Eating and other things to do at the summit
Panorama Restaurant, right at the upper cable car station, serves food with the same 360° view the viewpoint is known for — a good option if you want to sit down with the view rather than just photograph it and move on. The summit has also had adventure-park-style activities over the years (zipline/skywalk-type attractions among them) alongside the cable car station — availability and operators change, so check current listings when you’re there rather than assuming a specific one is still running.
The Game of Thrones connection
Mount Srđ appears in the show as the hill above King’s Landing, used for filming several scenes overlooking the city walls. You don’t need a dedicated tour to see it — the same viewpoints buggy tours pass are the filming locations, with the added bonus of seeing them from a moving off-road vehicle instead of a queue at the cable car platform.
What the buggy trails actually cover
Beyond the summit viewpoint, Mount Srđ has a network of gravel tracks through pine forest and open scrubland, connecting several viewpoints most cable-car visitors never reach. Our self-drive tours (30 minutes) cover a loop of the closer trails; private tours (2–3 hours) go further, at a relaxed pace, with stops wherever you want photos. If you’re comparing options, see our full buggy safari Dubrovnik guide for what’s included.
Best time of day
Sunset is famously the busiest and most photographed time at the summit viewpoint — beautiful, but crowded. Morning slots are quieter and cooler for off-road riding; see our best time of year guide and best sunset spots guide for the full picture.
Hiking alternative
A marked trail (Serpentine Path) connects the Old Town to the summit on foot — roughly 45–60 minutes uphill, steep and exposed to sun, no shade for most of the route. It’s a legitimate free alternative to the cable car, but it doesn’t reach the wider trail network a buggy does, and midday heat makes it a poor match for summer.
Doing it as a buggy tour vs. cable car alone
The cable car gets you the summit view, Fort Imperial, and the restaurant in under an hour round trip. A buggy tour gets you that same view plus the actual mountain — the trails, forest, and quieter viewpoints most cable-car visitors never see — while someone else (self-drive) or our driver (private) handles the terrain. See our pricing for both tour types.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's at the top of Mount Srđ?
The summit has the main viewpoint, Fort Imperial (home to the Homeland War Museum), Panorama Restaurant, and the starting point for all buggy tours.
